Product Description

Black Prince (Chyorny Prints) is a legendary indeterminate tomato from Siberian breeding – and one of the finest dark heirloom varieties you can grow in a temperate climate. What makes Black Prince special? The medium to large fruits (150–300 g) ripen to a deep reddish-brown with dark shoulders. The flavour is unmistakable: sweet, juicy and slightly smoky – far more complex than standard red varieties. Thanks to the thin skin, it is a perfect salad and snacking tomato straight off the vine. Because of its Siberian heritage, this variety is exceptionally cold-tolerant and sets fruit reliably even in cool, unsettled summers – a real advantage for outdoor growing in Central Europe. With good care, a single plant yields 12–18 kg of fruit per season. The dark colour is no accident: it signals an unusually high content of lycopene and anthocyanins, two of the most powerful natural antioxidants. Who is this variety for? Anyone looking for a robust, high-yielding tomato with gourmet flavour – in the greenhouse or the open field. Beginners get along with Black Prince just fine. Ideal for fresh eating, caprese, sauces and preserving. Open-pollinated: you can save your own seed every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do you sow Black Prince tomato?

Sow indoors from late February to early April at 22–25 °C. Plant out into the open field or greenhouse from mid-May, after the last frost.

Is Black Prince suitable for outdoor growing?

Yes, very much so. Thanks to its Siberian heritage the variety is exceptionally cold-tolerant and crops reliably outdoors even in cool, unsettled summers.

What does Black Prince tomato taste like?

Sweet, juicy and slightly smoky – noticeably more complex than standard red varieties. The thin skin makes it an ideal salad and snacking tomato.

Does Black Prince need pruning?

Yes. As an indeterminate vine tomato it should be pruned of side shoots regularly and trained on a sturdy support, ideally with one or two stems.

Can you save your own seed from Black Prince?

Yes. Black Prince is an open-pollinated heirloom, not a hybrid. Seed can be saved from fully ripe fruits every year and will grow true to type.
